So, he has finally gone!
The BBC is reporting that Sandy Easdale, brother of Rangers Director James Easdale, has agreed to exercise his option to buy Mr Green’s shares, and therefore become, as he says, the largest shareholder in Rangers.
“Between my family holdings and through other supporting investors I now have the largest shareholding in Rangers Football Club,” he said.
“There has been continued speculation and constant enquiries to buy this largest holding in Rangers. But Mr Green gave me the first option which I exercised.”
(It might be churlish and pedantic to say this, but he is the largest shareholder in Rangers International Football Club PLC, not Rangers Football Club.)
Mr Green was quoted as saying:-
“Over the last few months numerous individuals and corporate bodies have expressed interest in obtaining my shares although much of this was to solicit press coverage and attract attention,” said Green via a statement.
“Sandy said he would buy them and he has. I knew he would and he will do what’s best for Rangers now he has a more substantial percentage.
“I want to make it clear that this means I will have no ongoing influence or financial interest at the club but I remain a fan and fervently hope that Rangers will soon be back at the top where they belong.”
One wonders what price Mr Green got for the shares as today’s opening was 46p and when I last looked they had risen to 51p!
One also wonders how, being “locked in” till December he has actually sold the shares.
Well, I am sure we will get an announcement to the Stock Exchange soon which will make it all clear.
And as for Charles Green – who can forget the big hands, the champion sprinter, the Dallas Cowboys and Adidas and Nike…
Who can avoid shedding a tear at the thought that he won’t get to hear the Champions League theme song at Ibrox?
Who can feel anything but sympathy for a man forced out from the business he saved, with only the consolation of a few million pounds to take away the pain…
Farewell Charlie – we hardly knew you (although Ecojon had you right from the minute you appeared!)
