Is Walter Smith “Widely Acknowledged” as Rangers Most Successful Manager?

One wonders who is responsible for writing the Stock Exchange releases for Rangers. I have mentioned before the fact that, in every LSE statement, there is mention that the “Club” is managed by Ally McCoist “who is still the Club’s all time leading goalscorer”.

One wonders if they will ever mention his managerial skills, which might seem more relevant for investors reading the releases.

One also wonders if the people who write these statements on behalf of Rangers realise that there is such a thing as “over-egging the pudding”.

Yesterday’s statement contained a masterpiece of the art. Did you spot it?

It was this line:-“Walter Smith is widely acknowledged as the Club’s most successful manager.”

WS

Now, nothing I say here is intended to detract from his undoubted managerial achievements. There is no doubt he was a very successful manager – no doubt at all. He took Rangers on from the heights achieved by Graeme Souness and reached the “nine in a row” pinnacle.

He then came back and steadied the ship after Paul Le Guen’s stewardship, winning more titles before passing the baton to Mr McCoist.

But the statement said that he was “widely acknowledged” as Rangers best manager – almost as if those who write the statements need Rangers always to be at the very peak – perhaps exemplified by the numerous “world records” claimed by the Club as it passed through SFL3.

The point of this post is to look at what is meant to be an official statement for the purposes of the stock market and investors, and see how overblown it became, thanks to a couple of ill-chosen words.

I hope that some of the Rangers fans who read this might contribute their thoughts too, and I trust that those who are not Rangers fans will be polite in discussing the issue. This post is not about the suitability of Mr Smith to be the chairman of a quoted company – that comes next, but is focussing on the “advert” which consists of the Stock Exchange announcement.

There would be little to complain about if the statement said that Mr Smith was “arguably” or “possibly” or even “seen by some as” Rangers’ most successful manager. Or even if he was described as “one of the most successful manger”.

But to say that he is not just widely regarded, but “widely acknowledged”, seems to be elevating him above the pantheon of great Ibrox bosses.

Better than William Wilton – founding manager and winner of eight league titles?

More successful than Bill Struth – winner of 18 leagues and 10 cups in his 34 years (and of more of the War years are included)?

A better boss than Scott Symon – winner of 6 leagues, 5 cups and 4 league cups in a career diminished only by coming up against Jock Stein at Celtic?

What about Willie Waddell, who in the midst of Celtic’s nine in a row, won Rangers its only European title?

Or Graeme Souness, who took over after Rangers had won only 3 leagues in over 20 years, and promptly changed the face of Scottish football, and dragged Rangers back to the top?

If one looks at winning percentages too, which are by no means everything, but which mean something, what do we find?

In descending order, the winning percentages for Rangers bosses (ignoring caretakers) runs as follows:

67.53   66.83   65.96   65.78   65.52   65.34   65.25   64.84

64.03   63.32   62.86   56.49   52.08   51.61   43.65

I am sure that there are some who could rhyme off which managers owned those  success percentages, but for those who can’t, the list, from highest to lowest, is as follows:-

Dick Advocaat

Bill Struth

Alex McLeish

William Wilton

Walter Smith (1st spell)

Scott Symon

Jock Wallace (1st spell)

Ally McCoist

David White

Graeme Souness

Walter Smith (2nd spell)

Willie Waddell

John Greig

Paul Le Guen

Jock Wallace (2nd spell)

I must confess to being rather surprised by some of the statistics – Advocaat and McLeish so highly ranked, and Smith so lowly (in comparison). And Mr McCoist in mid-table, although having SFL3 opposition will have helped the percentage somewhat!

None of which suggests that Walter Smith was not a successful manager – as I said there is no doubt that he was, but to say that he is “widely acknowledged” as the most successful manager …

To use a good Glasgow phrase … gie’s peace!

thats cha up twattering as bomber says lol

  7. Tam McCondie

WALTER no surname was so successful that he had to sit back for around 6 months twiddling his fingers, or checking his p45, whilst Advocaat ran the show from Holland. This was, of course, while the backstabber was working his notice after Murray bulleted him.

  8. Sevco’s Latest Star Signing…
    =======================

Stevie Smith…yes that one…has returned to the Ibrox fold after being out of the game for a year.

Sevco fans must hope Smith’s not as partial to a chocolate doughnut as Sally.

Regardless, master manager McCoist has shown his ability to fashion a pig’s ear out of a cow’s arse, so fit or not Smith will probably be right up there with McCoist’s previous signings.

The ones that were supposedly going to storm the third division last year.

Should be an exciting, laugh a minute 2nd division campaign.

McCoist will no doubt view avoiding relegation as acceptable, but of course his first priority will be to win the 2nd division, and…ahem!… The Scottish Cup, and League Cup.

However he may have to settle for a bottom six place in the league and a semi-final place in the Ramsden Cup as a consolation.

  9. Tam McCondie

Paul, you state that there would have been little to complain about if he had even been described as “one of the most successful manger”. Would that be the manger as in eating? If it is then surely mccoist has been the most successful.

  10. barcabuster

    @Mick.
You have taken a pounding the past couple of days, some of it self inflicted, but I am glad you have calmed down. Because cometh the hour, cometh the man.
As far as I can see, you are the only one who has researched some data on today’s topic, and you have posted it for all to see.
Well done mate in showing not only his statistical battles with a real manager, but highlighting the incredible sums of somebody else’s money he has frittered away. I posted earlier, that it is difficult to grade achievements due to the variables involved
However you have proved me wrong on that and shown The Cardigan, not to be a great manager, but the equivelant of a frenzied WAG at Harrods buying a load of expensive shite, but is still, underneath, mutton dressed as succulent.
Fair play to you mate. You are a great poster bud and a hive of info when you don’t post in haste.

    • mick

thanks barca that was nice of you to highlight that ,after looking at the walter myths past its factual to say it was msm spin he was a legend legend of ebt and financial doping more like

      • Stevie

And then you had to go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like…
        Well…your next post.
Never mind Mick. Monti and Barca still love you!

  11. JohnBhoy

The Green Brigade are a model of social conscience. Rangers, on the other hand, lived and died lining their own pockets. The Sevco lads are hopping mad today lol.

    A four-leaf clover on my breast…

    • Niall Walker

” The Green Brigade are a model of social conscience.”

Not according to Celtic FC they aint.

      • mick

the gb are modern artists via tivos and performances anti violent and polite and always there to help any fan that needs it the speak polite hardly swear and are Curtis coming and going from the stadium they rank amongst the friendliest ultra group in Europe also the are left wing thats why in hate fulled right wing minds there bad as a fan and a scarver as they call us a think they are great for youth culture and have a great future at our club a have yet to see them cause a fight or trouble

        • Niall Walker

” a have yet to see them cause a fight or trouble ”

Wiki Green Brigade, there seems to have been some violence, but of course it won’t be their fault, its against their moral conscience.

          • Niall,

This Blog is Not about Mick, it is about Walter Smith..

Never mind his abilities as a Football Coach/Manager, that is in the past.

Would you like to comment, from a Businessman’s stance, on why he qualifies as a Chairman of an AIM Company which has just had over £22m of investment placed in it..

Is he qualified for the post, can he unite the Board or is he just a Front-man to bring in the season Ticket money & keep the fans happy?

Is he a Panacea or just a Placebo to keep The People calm while things unfold?

          • parmahamster

While I’m no defender of the GB as a unit(frankly I agree with the philosophy that they need to realise – and soon – that their uber-Tim mentality will be the rock on which they will perish), I will defend to the hilt their right to behave as they do, they at least do bring colour and atmosphere to matches.

Which makes me wonder about your oft-stated tendencies towards the black and gold of the Methil lads and how you square this with your consistent sniping. In all honesty Niall (that IS your name, isn’t it?), I have more time for the genuine trolls like Carson than I ever will for a deceitful, nasty, spineless piece of work as yourself.

  12. Geddy Lee

I’m just surprised they didn’t refer to Smith as “Sir Walter”.

I must say, he’s appointment has not met with universal approval from
    the whole of Sevcovia.

Some of them even think his appointment has everything to do with selling season tickets, now Green is not here to issue another of his ignorance ridden statements.

    Who would have thought it?

    • barcabuster

      @Geddy Lee.
I noticed that mate. This wee mini murmerrings of sensible Sevconians might gather a bit of pace. Some of them are finally beginning to see they are being taken for mugs.
This comes on the back of a survey on TBD where only 64% said they were renewing SB’s whatever the outcome. I don’t think the Cardigan has quite the pulling power the board had hoped for.
I think they are running out of “Celebrities” down Sevco way, but the idea of getting in a Chairman with experience, qualifications and a proven track record is lost on them. Once again they are pandering to the masses, but might have mis-judged this time.
I think the institutional investers would have preferred a safe pair of hands, not an equally expensive door stop.

      • Geddy Lee

        barcabuster…….

It’s one thing adopting a Cam Llike “Everything in the garden’s ALWAYS rosy” posture on open forums, simply to try and save face.

Another thing entirely when the debate features “the rangers” fans only.

There, such “bampottery” is not tolerated by those genuinely concerned about where the club is going under the current regime.

The shock of just how bad McCoist obviously is as a manager, demonstrated by the shocking level of football shown, and his complete inability to read the game, and make proper tactical changes, is still resonating strongly.

I doubt Lennon’s rising stock is helping the mood.

        • barcabuster

          @Geddy Lee.
I agree bud, but I find that their most sensible posters to date have been CG, IA,,CW & BS. 🙂

    • Maggie

      @Geddy Lee
Have you not noticed my habit of referring to Mr Smith as HRH Walter because of the reverential, forelock tugging, subservient attitude of the MSM towards him.I almost expect them to back out of the room bowing and scraping in his hallowed presence.Nauseating.

      • Geddy Lee

        Maggie

I wonder if his first proclamation is to order the “chop” for Jabba? LOL

I have not been posting much recently as my missus is still not 100%- this seems to be going on forever.
We are off for a short holiday in Malta.
Could I urge everyone to get a grip- the site has gone really downhill, too much puerile abuse and egotistical pretences of intellectual and moral superiority.
I had problems with Mick and Monti in the past but these were resolved and both were kind enough to display good wishes for my wife. I do not believe for one minute now they really hold to the views expressed here.
    Lifes too short.
I will leave you with these thoughts.
    Rangers are a phoenix club.
Rangers have some bad supporters, but most are decent. They have a more serious sectarian issue than Celtic.
Celtic have some bad supporters, but most are decent.
There are huge issues facing Scotland today. Rangers are a sideshow.
There are many more issues worth discussing.
    All this is interminably boring.

May you all keep well, safe and whatever your religion is may it console you.
Now get out and enjoy yourselves, lifes too short.
Were away to Malta, no doubt Father Spiteri will give me more Holy Water for my old Presbyterian bones.

    • Geddy Lee

NO-one can argue with that !!

      Enjoy your holiday david.

      Have a good holiday David.

    • Maggie

      @david

You make many good points above david. At times things get out of hand, and people do get carried away, saying things under cover of the blog to score points, things they’d never say face to face.
It’s only football, and as you rightly say, when issues of ill health,or misfortune come to light, divisions are forgotten and real concern is shown.I was however sorry to see Adam leave,as he was a decent guy,and honest about his club’s failings.I started off being pretty “miffed” with some of his posts and had a few online spats with him,but came to admire him for sticking around and fighting his corner.
I’m glad you’re not abandoning us david.Enjoy your holiday.I hope your wife feels the benefit of it.

Niall, I understand that you are struggling with the English language. Spliced commas and confusion between “its” and “it’s” are clearly driving you bananas. Not to worry – JohnBhoy is close at hand to offer guidance. However, today we will start with extending your limited vocabulary.

Big Word For Today: onomatopoeia. This is where the sound of a word – or any combination thereof – represents its meaning. Examples include: BOOM!, Tick-Tock and Whoosh. The latter was the sound of The Rangers going down the tubes.

Debate should make you think, with alternative points of view perhaps making you change your mind occasionally, but the standard from the Hun hordes is sadly lacking in depth or in fact.

So we’re left with letting them haver or kicking them in the crutch.

Its certainly not debating, but it is good fun.

      • Fra

@Bill…I’ve just read this. God, your a touchy wee soul. Read, agree or disagree, comment or not and move on. Give it a TU or a TD but to claim on the behalf of all Scottish people is a little bit above your station. I enjoy most contributions because of the variety of opinions, whether I agree or disagree. The extremes of the political spectrum is covered which makes Paul’s blog one of the, if not the best blog out there.

My point Bill is, we are all big bhoys and ghirls so enjoy posts for what they are and stop getting out your tree. I enjoy Carsons posts as much as Mick solely on the lack of censorship which is a pleasant change on the net

Fcku me! Talk about life imitating a blog!!!! Yesterday, while skimming through the Sevconian posts– De Niall, and he whose name must not be mentioned lest he tremble with fear—- I was mildly irritated by the optimistic note coming from those whiffy directions. How, I asked myself, can I insert a pin in their tiny balloons of hope? And, I admit rather off-handedly, I suggested that if Saint Craigie went before M’Lud, the Sevco soap opera could run, and run, and, run. This was no more than a throwaway jibe. So, imagine my very pleasant surprise, when the second Messiah—the one that came after Saint Craigie– aka Chico Verde, pops up on Talk Shite radio and tells Andy Not-Much-Gray-Matter, and the other guy with a mouth like a cat’s arse, that Saint Craigie could be haunting Sevco ‘for a decade or more to come.’ How I laughed, and laughed! But then I began to wonder—–why would Chico think the sainted one was capable of such a feat? Unless Chico knows what cards Saint Craigie is holding. And they’re all fckuing aces. Lurving it!

    • Niall Walker

” Unless Chico knows what cards Saint Craigie is holding. And they’re all fckuing aces. Lurving it! ”

If CW was holding any aces he would have marched CG into court months ago, a handful of aces does not take decades for a result.

      • Ed Paisley

Niall it does sound like Charles is acknowledging that Craig Whyte has a good hand, if not all the aces.

        • Niall Walker

          Ed,

I have never doubted CW has a case against CG and Sevco 5088, what some want to ignore is CG/Ahmad did what they did as directors of Sevco 5088 not in their capacity as directors of Sevco ( Scotland). This makes CG/Ahmad personally liable for any losses since Sevco 5088 has no assets, so the most CW can get is what he was promised in the original deal assuming CG and Ahmad can afford it.

People assume because Sevco (Scotand) benefited from this fraud the deal will be reversed, but this will never happen because CW’s share was only a tiny percentage of the company, he did not own the shares with the assets at any time because he did not pay 5.5 million for them.

          • arb urns

is that u admitting a ‘fraud’ has taken place n…. do u know something……
a think we should be told a really do………….

          • Niall’

Sevco 5088 was replaced by Sevco Scotland without the permission of the Directors of 5088. D&P Ballsed up by allowing Green to do this.

Sevco Scotland, instead of Sevco 5088 became RIFC.

Every Free Share, Every Penny Share, Every Discounted Share,, every Fund Raising Fee given & money raised, could have properly belonged to Sevco 5088 or their agents.

The £5.5m is a rubbish argument to raise, the money would have been raised in the EXACT same way by the EXACT same people if Sevco 5088 had been in control.

It would appear that the only thing which prevented 5088 being in control was the cheating of Green which he freely admits.

          • Raymilland

            @Niall Walker

CW did not pay £5.5m for the assets; he only paid £1 for them. Regardless of the minimal fee paid by CW; it would appear that whoever paid the £5.5m did so in an ill-founded transaction that may be fraudulent.

I still don’t understand your percentage of the company argument. Which company do you mean?

Perhaps you can answer this question; when D&P acted as agents prior to the sale being concluded; to whom did the assets belong?

CW owned the assets to begin with; he had a private deal to have Green front a transfer of the assets through a company which D&P were contractually obliged to sell to.

I would assume that due to certain directors of Sevco 5088 being the victims of a fraud as perpetrated by Charles Green; he and his company Sevco Scotland Limited would have illegal possession of the assets.

Whoever paid the £5.5m has absolutely no bearing regards the legality of the above.

The question of gratuitous alienation has become entirely separate from the £5.5m sale price. Sevco 5088 received absolutely no consideration regards ownership of the assets. Sevco 5088 had first dibs on the assets as the contacts with D&P would confirm. The fact that someone else paid D&P for those assets is irrelevant to CW’s claim.

Think about it. You’d best look for reverse gear.

      • paul

Do you need to defend everything that is printed against Sevco, you Niall are you know what you are no need to spell it out, an east fife fan gies piece.

Maybe’s am just thick or something, correct me if I’m wrong someone, as I understood it, the transfer embargo ends january 2014 but sevco are allowed to make pre contract signings this september coming, correct? Then why are they, that should be how are they being allowed to sign players in may, anyone out there able to enlighten this thick wee timmy, no offence to any other timmies btw.

      ==============================================

Sevco are banned from buying players until the 1st January 2014, but can sign players from 1st September who don’t currently have a club or whose contracts run out on or before 31st August of this year.

The waters have been muddied over the last months by talks of £10mill warchests to ‘buy’ players for the start of the new season.

      This is inaccurate.

Not only the bit about buying players, but the £10mill warchest.

Well blow me,,,steady! Who would have thought that my early morning contributions to this rather lazy effort by Mr McConville would have been the intellectual zenith of todays posts?
The race to the bottom fair gathered speed and Adam decided his time would be better spent elsewhere.
Can Paul or someone qualified tell me what happens when Craigie and his team turn up in court with their 333 page dossier of evidence and most of it has been “leaked” onto the internet?
I could Google it but i’m practising my putting stroke for tomorrow’s golf soiree,,,,btw, danny bhoy,i see your anger is getting the better of you regards all things Rangers and the old brave tablets are kicking in.Its a bit immature to be lobbing that stuff over the internet son,wee weans do that wi their phones.

Would you make your mind up if your ignoring me or having wee digs every now and then.I would prefer the former and my ability to ignore rockets such as daring dan can certainly extend to you.
FYI,my comments regards Eco’s professed Buddhism have been to highlight the double standards of his disdain for bile spewing invective and his support for mick and Monti’s idiocy.
Any sly digs i have at the Catholic church and the Vatican are totally justified due to the atrocities carried out by both.Good Catholic Christians are just good people who i would happily invite to my barbie’s.The wearing of sashes is compulsory at these events and anyone who has had a humour transplant can walk on by.
